My Roots

I grew up in Virginia, in Spotsylvania County, an area rich in history. I played sports in high school and won 2 letters in football, graduated as an honor grad..went on to Business College and trade school at Tesst School of Electronics and The Computer Learning Center.. I've had a variety of jobs, including restaurant manager and cab driver - I met many interesting people that way, including Dan Rather, Jack Bruce (of the band Cream) and The Dillards (they used to play the 'Darlins', the hillbilly bluegrass band, on The Andy Griffith show).. I could probably write a book about those adventures and actually hope to someday.. I've also worked at delivery and telecommunications.. I am curently studying Web Design and hope to find employment in that very interesting field..

My first love is music, I've written over 60 songs and have been able to play some of them in public and record a number on tape and CD..
I started to learn to play guitar when I was about 13 or 14. I played in a high school band called The Royals, I think we had three gigs, one at a birthday party, one at Stafford Fire House and the other at a Moose Club.. The Royals faded away into a more Beatles/Rolling Stones/Yardbirdish group that had several names starting with The Grapes of Wrath and ending up as The Days After. The group needed a bass player and I was elected.. I didn't know anything about bass except that it had four strings. I got some tape and an old guitar and wrote under the strings what each note was on the fretboard and with a book on bass guitar I started my new adventure.. I found that since I played guitar before bass it seemed to be better because I could recognize chords played on guitar and I knew chord structure and the notes in a chord...

We played teen dances and, of course, The Moose Club.. we used to advertise if you couldn't get The Rolling Stones to play your party, we were the next best thing..

Two of the guys in the group moved to DC and 'The Days After' became the days over... I joined a Maryland band after that that was first called The Proscenium Mind and then later Genesis - this was before anyone had heard of the English Genesis..

I had my brush with future almost greatness in (American) Genesis as Rick Roberts was our lead singer and also my roomate.. Rick later went on to become the principle singer/songwriter of the group Firefall which sold millions of records later in the 70's and into the 80's..

In our Genesis we played 6 nights a week for a while. We would come home after a gig and Rick would listen to Traffic and I would listen to Steppenwolf. We had two girls in the group, one on drums the other on keyboards and they both had day jobs.. playing 6 nights and week and 5 day a week day jobs don't mix so the group finally disbanded, Rick going to New York while I stayed in DC for my then girlfriend..

I've seen Rick a few times since those days with Firefall, he told me he made a million dollars and spent all of it..

I had all my musical equipment (except an acoustic guitar) stolen soon after Genesis broke up and it took a while to replace all of it.. I was able to play in coffee houses occasionally..

With new equipment I started out again into the rock world, playing with a band I got to name Led Free, with Bobbi Woods and an assortment of other musicians doing rock, blues, country and bluegrass music.. I learned a lot.. after Led Free ran out of gas I helped form a group called Jubilee, made up of people from the bar I worked at that included Indians.. we played at The National Congress of American Indians with Floyd Westerman and had a few other gigs at places like Food For Thought and The Midnight Clam.. at one time the group included Caucasian, American Indian, Black and Oriental members.

Jubilee gave way to Shadow Of A Dream which did original and cover music, the highlights probably being a number of Ralph Nader Common Cause events.
