Midway again in the red
Midway have just made public their Q3 financial report, and unfortunately it's not good news. The publisher apparently lost almost $30 million US in the past 3 months alone. Midway blamed this loss on poorer than expected sales of Suffering: Ties That Bind and L.A. Rush. The projections aren't looking fantastic either...in fact they are predicting to lose another $20 million US in the coming quarter.
Midway believes the situation they now find themselves in is because they got off to a bad start with the current generation of consoles.
"During the first half of the console cycle, product quality, average markets, and poor decision making hurt Midway," said David Zucker during a conference call. "Upgrading our marketing, improving our performance in Europe, and raising the quality of our games--we believe we accomplished all three of these things."It's not all bad news though as sales jumped 74% from the same time last year.

While we are in the mood of bringing you some more light-hearted material, we thought we'd show you this Comic from one of my favourite webcomics Ctrl+Alt+Del. I can imagine Liu Kang and Kung Lao having this conversation. Quite funny, though a warning that there is some colourful language used.

Midway's fighter achieves Greatest Hits and Platinum status for PS2, Xbox; one-on-one fighting, bizarre modes now $19.99.
Beating opponents down to bloody stumps just got a whole lot cheaper. Midway Games today announced that Mortal Kombat: Deception will now be redistributed as a Platinum Hits title on the Xbox and Greatest Hits title on the PlayStation 2. Deception will come in new packaging and sell for the new price of $19.99.
In addition to the gory one-on-one fighting in line with the franchise, Midway added some rather peculiar game modes to Deception. Konquest mode puts gamers through a story-driven adventure mode, puzzle kombat is a Tetris-style game, and chess kombat is loosely based on the classic board game.
The game was originally released in October 2004, and, according to Midway, has shipped 1.9 million units worldwide. Mortal Kombat: Deception is rated M for Mature. For more on the game, check out GameSpot's full review.

MK: SM now available in PAL
Midway have pulled a double swifty. Last friday we reported that Midway had shipped Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks a week earlier than originally announced. However, we didn't think this applied to PAL territories as almost all retailers listed the game being released this coming Friday. However, as it turns out, the game is now available in PAL territories as well, also shipping about a week earlier than expected. This is also a first for Midway with them shipping a MK game to both NTSC and PAL regions at almost the same time...usually PAL need to wait a couple of months more. Being only one week apart from each other this time around isn't too shabby.

Although there's already one Mortal Kombat game confirmed for the PSP--Mortal Kombat: Deception Unchained, due next February--word began to percolate last week that a handheld version of Shaolin Monks is in the works. The rumor trail led back to a post on Mortalkombatonline.com, an independent MK fan site with strong ties to Midway Games. These ties are so strong, apparently, that one of Shaolin Monks' producers, Shaun Himmerick, has been using the forums for his own developer diary. In the sixth entry, he mentions that "we are doing analysis of possibly doing MKSM for PSP.... And I say an ANALYSIS, not a commitment to do it." (Emphasis in the original.) But despite Himmerick's caveat, word began to spread that MKSM for the PSP was a done deal, prompting a quick and emphatic response from a Midway spokesperson. "That's a rumor at best," said the rep. "I can confirm that Deception is in the works on PSP and should ship by the end of this year. Shaolin PSP is nonexistent right now but could definitely kick off in development soon after the platforms ship.
